With Spring Break not too far away, golf lovers living in colder environments have the chance to plan the ultimate getaway. If you are looking at options for destinations, Orlando, Florida is the way to go to get back into the game.

A successful golf vacation requires knowing which course(s) present challenges for players of different levels, as well as the opportunity to improve your skills. A long day of golf should also be followed by the right dinners to celebrate the occasion.

Staying at The Bear’s Den Resort Orlando can help you get the most out of your golf retreat. Here are Spring Break golf-related activities to do with friends and family in Orlando.

Alternate Shots

If are you looking for ways to make your games of golf a more team-based activity, then a game of Alternate Shots can help. With this game, you can have two teams where one player hits the tee shot, the next player plays the approach, and you continue with each shot and team member until you get the ball in the hole.

Alternate Shots can work if you know each member of your team has a better time hitting certain shots than others. This can also help speed up your game if you have other activities planned for the day.

5 Clubs

Golfer attempts to hit out of a sand trap on the Jack Nicklaus course while 3 friends watch.

A golf vacation at The Bear’s Den gives you the opportunity to test your skills, and one game that focuses on that is 5 Clubs. Players are tested by only being allowed to use a driver, 6 iron, 8 iron, pitching wedge, and putter.

By being limited on the clubs you can use, you will be forced to change your strategy and may have a harder time with holes or environments that would normally be easy. If you practice enough with this game, you may be able to use your new strategy in the future.

Bingo, Bango, Bongo

Another way you can make golf more interesting, especially in a large group, is with a game of Bingo, Bango, Bongo. The fun of this activity comes from the different ways you can score points for yourself.

In Bingo, Bango, Bongo, points are awarded to the first player to reach the green, the player closest to the hole on the approaching shot, and the first player to put out. The winner is whoever has the best score at the end of the game.

Skins

Man holding a golf club on a green

Friendly competition can make your golf retreat more entertaining, and a game of Skins is a prime example. You give each hole a point, or “skin,” and the winner of each hole gets that hole’s skin.

Skins carry over to the next hole if two or players tie in a hole, and you can give holes more points based on factors such as difficulty. While this activity can be challenging, the chance of making a good hole can help boost your chances of winning.

Four Ball

Your Bear’s Den getaway with golfers of different skill levels requires considering games that may work for the less experienced. With Four Ball, you can create a tournament with friends or family who are still new to golf.

In Four Ball, you play in teams of two, and the team score for each hole is the lowest score made by either teammate. You can use this opportunity to teach your teammate so that both of you can help your chances of winning.

Scramble

Couple playing a round of golf at the Bear's Den Resort Orlando

If you are looking for ways to pack in as many games as possible during your retreat, then we recommend time for Scramble. This activity allows a steady pace for golfers by focusing on the lowest scores possible.

With Scramble, you use a stroke-based format in which each player hits their tee shot and you decide which tee shot is in the best position. Your team will play your second shots from that tee shot and continue for every shot until the end of the game.

Bear’s Den Tournament

Staying at The Bear’s Den gives you three courses to choose from: Jack Nicklaus Course, Arnold Palmer Course, and Tom Watson Course. Staying at this resort for at least a week gives you the chance to see what each course has to offer.

Each golf course comes with their own designs and challenges, which gives you the opportunity to start your own game. You can golf at each course to see who has the best score at each location, or you can try each course multiple times with different activities.

When it comes to enjoying a nice meal with fellow golfers before and after games, Nicklaus Clubhouse at Bear’s Den is a reliable destination. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners come with different options to help you start and end the day.

Eating at Nicklaus Clubhouse allows you to gain the energy needed for the day’s game or celebrate a victory with a large dinner. You can also discuss ideas for different games for the rest of the vacation over drinks.

Having fun and improving your skills on a golf vacation can be a challenge, but Bear’s Den aims to make the process a piece of cake. Book with The Bear’s Den today for a memorable golf vacation.

Quick & Easy, Patriotic Themed Drinks for July 4th https://bearsdenorlando.com/blog/quick-easy-july-4th-drinks/ Thu, 01 Jul 2021 10:00:38 +0000 https://bearsdenorlando.com/?p=1687

For many of us, celebrating Independence Day is done at outdoor activities, such as picnics and pool time. Here, we offer five ways to stay refreshed at the height of summer with our easy-to-make patriotic drinks for July 4th. Several of our favorites can be adapted to mocktails for kids or those who prefer nonalcoholic drinks.

1: Patriotic Pina Colada

Ingredients

  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1 can coconut cream
  • 3–4 cups frozen pineapple (Freeze fresh pineapple, or drain 2 cans diced pineapple and freeze, or use frozen pineapple from your grocery store’s freezer aisle.)
  • ½ cup rum
  • Ice
  • Pineapple juice to taste
  • Splash of Grenadine, for serving
  • Splash of Blue Curacao, for serving
  • Firecracker popsicle, for serving
Pina colada coctail on bar counter.

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients, minus Grenadine and Blue Curacao, until combined.
  2. Add ice to thicken and pineapple juice to taste.
  3. Slowly add a splash of Grenadine and Blue Curacao to create red, white and blue layering effect. Be careful to not add too fast or it will turn purple!
  4. Top with firecracker popsicle for garnish.

Yield: 2 drinks.

From Chrissie Nelson Rotko, Off The Eaten Path Blog: “I always equate pina coladas with tropical vacations, making them so perfect for summer’s hot temperatures. An added bonus, pina coladas are easy to make at home and the coconut milk makes them white, so they are a good starting point for a patriotic color palate.”

2: Red, White, & Blue Layered Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. grenadine
  • 3 oz. lemonade
  • 1 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. Blue Curacao
  • Ice
Patriotic Red White and Blue Shots for July 4th.

Instructions

  1. Add grenadine to a glass and then fill with ice.
  2. In a shaker, shake lemonade and vodka. Then gently pour the mixture over the back of a spoon into the glass, creating the white layer of the drink.
  3. Cascade blue curacao over the back of a spoon to make the final blue layer.

Yield: 1 drink.

“After a little trial and error and some research I found the key to making a layered cocktail. The liquid with the highest sugar content needs to be at the bottom of the drink, then layered in order of their sugar content,” writes Sarah Vanderkooy of Creative Ramblings. “The layers last just long enough to show off your mixology skills, then they blend together to create a delicious drink.”

3: Watermelon Sangria

Ingredients

  • 1 large watermelon
  • 1 (750 mL) bottle white wine, chilled
  • 2 c. white rum
  • 1 c. seltzer
  • ⅓ c. lime juice (from about 6 limes)
    • 2 limes, thinly sliced
    • 2 c. assorted fresh or frozen fruit, such as pineapple, blueberries, and strawberries
Watermelon lemonade with lime and fresh basil leaves on concrete background. Refreshing summer drink.

Instructions

  1. Slice off the top third of the watermelon lengthwise (save for later use), and score fruit with a knife. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, scoop out watermelon and transfer to blender.
  2. Blend watermelon until smooth. (If desired, strain seeds.)
  3. Add white wine, rum, seltzer, and lime juice and stir until combined, then add limes and fruit.
  4. Refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours, then serve.

Yield: 10–12 drinks.

From the editors at Delish: “This summery, batched cocktail can come together in no time, and serving it out of the watermelon is a surefire way to impress your guests. Any bottle of white will work here, but we imagine Moscato would be particularly good.”

4: Strawberry Popper Rocker

Ingredients

  • Strawberry Schnapps
  • 7UP
  • Strawberry and Tropical Blue Pop Rocks
Refreshing cold summer strawberry cocktail.

Instructions

  1. Dampen the edges of your glass with lemon juice.
  2. Dip the rims into a plate filled with the Tropical Blue Pop Rocks.
  3. Pour 1 shot of Schnapps into a glass.
  4. Fill with 7UP.
  5. Drop Strawberry Pop Rocks on top.

Yield: 1 drink.

“Add a little firecracker spark to your cocktails (or mocktails) this summer! How? It’s easy! POP ROCKS!” says Courtney Whitmore on Pizzazzerie. “I used to love this candy as a kid. They make a crackle sound when they hit your tongue and come in a variety of colors and flavors.”

5: Broad Stripes and Bright Stars Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 4 fresh blueberries
  • 1 ounce blueberry vodka
  • ¼ ounce absinthe
  • ¼ ounce simple syrup
  • 1 splash lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon raspberry liqueur
  • 3–4 ounces ginger beer, to taste
  • Sugar cube, for garnish

Instructions

  • In a cocktail shaker, muddle the fresh blueberries.
  • Add the blueberry vodka, absinthe, simple syrup, and lemon juice. Fill with ice and shake.
  • Pour everything into a highball glass. Drizzle with the raspberry liqueur and top with ginger beer.
  • Garnish with a sugar cube.

Yield: 1 drink.

“The flavor combination in the Broad Stripes and Bright Stars Cocktail is both marvelous and surprising,” says Colleen Graham on The Spruce Eats. “It’s a recipe created for Lucid Absinthe and definitely one of the more intriguing and pleasant ways to enjoy the somewhat notorious spirit.”

Happy Fourth of July!

Most of the recipes on the Joyful Healthy Eats blog, where this recipe is featured, take 30 minutes or less to prepare. Owner and cook Krista says, “This Cajun Mahi Mahi was pan seared because I really like the crispy exterior you can get on fish when you pan sear it instead of baking or grilling it. The Mango Pineapple Salsa is slightly sweet from the fruit with a hint of tang from the lime juice, combined with the spicy Mahi Mahi the flavors are out of this world good.”

“Chopped veggie salads hold up to the summer heat better than lettuce based salads,” says author Lisa Marshall on the 24/7 Low Carb Diner blog. “It is easy to put any number together at once, assembly line fashion. I pack the dressing separately. Vinaigrette dressings work really well too. Because they are thinner, the dressing is easier to get to the bottom of the cup.”

5 Fun Pool Games to Play with Your Family This Spring Break https://bearsdenorlando.com/blog/5-fun-pool-games-to-play-with-family-this-spring-break/ Thu, 01 Apr 2021 10:00:47 +0000 https://bearsdenorlando.com/?p=1243

Who doesn’t love spending the day poolside when you’re on vacation? The cool, blue water of your private pool at The Bear’s Den Resort Orlando and the warm Florida sun offer the perfect backdrop for a day of making fun memories. You and your family can add some excitement with these classic games that don’t require planning or even supplies.

1 Treasure Dive

Send your kids on a hunt for not-so-buried treasure in the pool! You can use whatever loose change you have on hand or an incentive such as light-up dive sticks to toss in the deep end. Be sure the participants have goggles so they can clearly see the treasure as they dive underwater.

2 Cannon Ball

The game dedicated to splashing is also one of creativity. Each person takes a turn jumping into the pool in a way that creates the biggest splash and most original in-flight demonstration. Aim for more hang time by jumping as high as you can off the edge.

3 Underwater Tea Party

Hosting an underwater tea party doesn’t require the beverage or fancy cups and saucers. Guests just need the ability to hold their breath long enough to mimic the actions of sitting on the bottom of the pool, pouring tea and then drinking it. You can add additional tasks each time you sink underwater to further challenge yourselves.

4 Marco Polo

Marco Polo is a game of tag in the pool with a twist. The person who is “it” closes his or her eyes while trying to “discover” where the other swimmers are. When the person calls “Marco,” the others must answer “Polo,” giving audible clues to their locations. The first swimmer to be caught is “it” for the next round.

5 Swim Races

Test your speed and endurance with a race across the pool. You can have a series of races or even set up relay teams. Afterward, be sure to treat yourselves to a refreshing drink and tasty snack by the pool!
